The number of California school districts facing fiscal distress has fallen by more than fifty percent, downwards to 92 from 188 a year agone, according to figures released Tuesday by the Country Section of Instruction.

The Department releases two acting status reports a year identifying which of the 1,037 school districts, county offices of educational activity and joint powers agencies are in financial jeopardy.

In this year's Second Interim Status Report, eight districts received negative certifications, meaning they don't have enough money to pay their bills and may need intervention by their county part of education. While that's down past iv from a year ago, information technology'due south a slight increment from the Outset Interim Status Written report for 2012-13, when 7 districts were on the negative list.  Some other 84 districts received qualified certifications, indicating that they may not exist able to encompass their costs inside the adjacent two years.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson credited passage of Suggestion xxx final Nov for much of the comeback. The ballot initiative will enhance a lilliputian over $6 billion for pedagogy through temporary increases in the sales tax and incomes for the state's wealthiest residents.

Torlakson tempered his remarks, however, noting that although the number of struggling districts has been cut in one-half, that nevertheless leaves many districts in fiscal danger.

"The 92 districts that all the same face financial jeopardy represent some ane.vii one thousand thousand students, and we must go along our work to get them on solid financial basis," Torlakson said in a written argument.

The latest numbers represent districts' financial condition equally of Jan. 31, predating Governor Chocolate-brown'southward May budget revisions and, according to the Section of Education, some may have inverse since then.
