"Games Cause Rape" Psychiatrist Defends Her Position

Dr. Carole Lieberman, the "media psychiatrist" who claimed on Fox News that videogames are responsible for turning people into rapists, has finally issued a instruction defending her claim.

In case you somehow missed it, Dr. Carole Lieberman, a three-time Emmy present-winning "media psychiatrist," author and expert witness for hire told Fox Intelligence last week that "the increase in rapes bottom be attributed in large part to the playing out of [sexual] scenes in videogames." That's right: videogames can grow populate into rapists.

Information technology was ludicrous, of path, non only because there is absolutely zero tell that videogames cause sexual violence but because information technology flies in the face of statistics showing that the incidence of rape has in reality declined significantly over the past two decades. Just none of that has prevented Lieberman from standing rump her statement.

After well-nigh a calendar week of ready, Lieberman put over verboten a command today claiming that her reception to demands for tell was delayed because she'd filed them away on the assumption that "everyone already knew about these studies," and hadn't been competent to get to them in a timely manner because of her "obligations to patients and other professional commitments." Enclosed with the statement were links to her supporting evidence, which included the American Psychological Connection's "Solving on Violence in Videogames and Interactive Media," which called for a reducing of violence in videogames being marketed to children and youth; a link to some other APA report called "Vulnerability to Violent Videogames: A Review and Integration of Personality Inquiry," which said that more or less personality types mightiness have an adverse reaction to bloody games but conceded that "a sizable number of studies have failed to find compelling links between VVGs [violent videogames] and aggressiveness"; and the obligatory hysterical tale about RapeLay.

In other words, there's not a whole lot to see here, nor is there any Defense of her claim that the number of reported rapes is up contempt the fact that the number of rumored rapes is down. Instead, what we'rhenium treated to is condescension and dismissal. Her response in full:

"I am sending this email to all of the reporters, editors, bloggers, gamers and others who have contacted me interrogative about what my opinion regarding violent video games was based upon. When I was first base asked to render studies, I did not have them on my fingertips – non because I didn't lie with they existed – but because I thought that everyone already knew around these studies and I had them filed gone. My obligations to patients and other nonrecreational commitments have delayed my gathering these examples of much studies, and sending them to you, hitherto."

"I have worked in the area of media wildness for numerous years. This included testifying before Congress on the issue, doing numerous media interviews, stopping the 'Schwarzenegger rocket' that was to have had an ad for Last Carry through Hero on it, being invited to contribute an essay on TV gamy violence to Larry King's book Beyond A Reasonable Doubt, etc. When the Aquilege murders took place, there were national polls where people voted along what they believed caused the two young manpower to vote down. Media violence ranked high on the list, so I, obviously erroneously, assumed that people standing knew more or less the studies showing this connective – and believed them to have proven the link."

"In any case, I would appreciate your including a mention of these studies along your websites, blogs or comments, or at least including a mention of the fact that I did provide such studies to you. Thank you."

So the matter was settled long since, put differently, and those of us World Health Organization weren't redolent of that fact have got cypher to blame but ourselves for not thoughtful. It's not exactly an overwhelming argument and the fact that RapeLay terminated ahead in the mix speaks for itself; it goes without saying that no observe was made of negative studies. It's hard to state where things will go from here – probably nowhere good enough – but at this point I think it's safe to assume that we won't be acquiring a Cooper Lawrence-style price of admission of erroneousness out of Dr. Lieberman.
